Angama is a traditional event held in various parts of Ishigaki Island in Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture, during the old Bon period in the seventh month of the lunar calendar. Ushumai and Nmii (grandfather and grandmother) wearing masks, along with costumed faamaa (fairies), visit homes and perform songs and dances as part of the ancestral memorial rites of old Bon. At the homes they visit, you can see up close the distinctive appearance of the costumed participants and the performing arts passed down through generations. When observing Angama, an important cultural asset of the community, visitors are asked to follow manners so as not to disrupt the event and to respect the traditions of Ishigaki Island.
