The Niu Festival (Warai Festival) is an unusual festival held every October at Niu Shrine in Hidaka River Town, Hidaka District, Wakayama Prefecture. Admission is free, and in a typical year many visitors come, with laughter echoing through the shrine grounds. The festival's origin lies in the story that when the local tutelary deity arrived late for the gods' gathering, everyone laughed and comforted it. From this unique anecdote it became known as the Warai Festival, and it is characterized by a comical, friendly atmosphere. On the day, worshippers and visitors gather, and the grounds of Niu Shrine are filled with liveliness. Please experience on site the humor-filled atmosphere that honors the tutelary deity.
