Hatsumizugi is a New Year tradition held at Ogigahama Beach in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture. It takes place every year on January 2, when participants enter the cold sea to pray for good health and freedom from illness in the year ahead. The event is organized by the local tourism association and related groups, and draws many people, including families and young participants. The warm-up exercises before entering the water and the sight of all the participants entering the sea together are particular highlights, and it is known as a traditional event held in the fresh air of the New Year.
